2008 in review

January 04, 2009 ·

As "usual", I start the year with a round-up of the highlights of last year, based on things that I blogged. It's been a strange year for me. After (seven) years with Macromedia / Adobe and most of 2007 spent freelancing, I took a full-time job with a startup and hired some amazing CFers to be part of my team. I (finally) learned Flex (and AIR). I learned a new language (Groovy) and did a lot less CFML programming than I've done in years while at the same time joining first the Open BlueDragon Steering Committee and then the CFML Advisory Committee, as well as attending more ColdFusion-related conferences than usual (cf.Objective(), Scotch on the Rocks, CFUNITED, Wee Dram of Scotch, MAX).

A Wee Dram Of Scotch

August 27, 2008 ·

A one-day CFML event in London to fill the gap left by CFDevCon. Thursday 25th, September 2008. Adobe keynote, talks by Mark Drew, Peter Bell, Mike Brunt, myself and Andrew Shorten. And raffles (of course - since this event is organized by the makers of Scotch on the Rocks!). Price? A ten quid cash donation on the door which will get you two free drinks and a discount on Scotch on the Rocks 2009. If you were going to CFDevCon - or wanted to go but couldn't afford it - come along to A Wee Dram of Scotch and catch some of CFDevCon's speakers for the cost of a few drinks! More details will be posted on the Wee Dram website shortly!

CFDevCon (and other UK news)

August 26, 2008 ·

Unfortunately, CFDevCon has collapsed due to lack of funds. I felt they were ambitious trying to plan yet another CFML conference in England after we'd already had CFUNITED Europe and Scotch on the Rocks, and so close to Flash on the Beach (and another web dev conference just before?) and then MAX Europe in Milan shortly after. Hopefully they'll be back next year with a better date. Despite that, I'm still going to be in England around that time (since my wife is judging a cat show in Telford in early October). So, I'll still be speaking at the Devon CFUG on Monday, September 29th, about Design Patterns. I'll also probably be speaking at Thames Valley CFUG in late September (still working that out with Kevin Roche). I'll also be speaking at a one-day CFML event in London - along with several other folks that y'all might know! Entrance will be just ten quid, cash, on the door (and will include two free drinks). See Big Mad Kev's blog post for more details.

Nicolas Lierman joins Broadchoice

July 14, 2008 ·

Nicolas Lierman, creator of the Google Analytics AIR application, is leaving Boulevart to join Broadchoice. We're naturally very excited to have Nicolas on board and driving our behavioral analytics platform. If you were at Scotch on the Rocks, you may have met Nicolas and heard him talk about analytics - with a very refreshing twist - and if you missed him then, you'll have a chance to catch him at CFDevCon 2008 where he'll be talking about "revolutionizing web analytics with Adobe AIR".

Life at Broadchoice

May 28, 2008 ·

May has been a quiet month on the blog because it has been an extremely busy month at Broadchoice. We completed our 2.0.2 and 2.0.3 releases and launched the new platform with a fair bit of press coverage. The platform is powered by ColdFusion 8.0.1, running Model-Glue 2 (BER), ColdSpring 1.2 BER and Transfer 1.0 BER and runs on a cluster of 64-bit Linux servers with synchronization of the Transfer cache managed through a set of ActiveMQ JMS server instances. The database is MySQL. We're continuing to work on a stream of minor releases as well as planning our next major release with a lot of new features. I'll be pulling together some presentations and articles about how we're using the frameworks together (because I think we're doing some interesting and unusual things, behind the scenes). I'll some a few snippets of code at Scotch in both of my presentations (and again at CFUNITED). I'm talking to the CFDevcon organizers about appropriate topics and they suggested a framework-related session so that might be the first unveiling of some of our ColdSpring / Transfer tricks and tips. I expect Ray will also be blogging about some aspects of our application architecture in due course. Feel free to sign up for a free Broadchoice account and see what we've been up to! Our support site (also powered by the Broadchoice Web Platform, as is our public website - we like to eat our own dog food!) has several ways for you to provide feedback to us!

CFDevCon 2008 details announced

May 10, 2008 ·

The CFDevCon 2008 website just launched with details about the location and an initial list of speakers and topics. September 25-26, Brighton, UK. As you can see, no topic is listed for me yet. My talk (or talks, perhaps) at CFDevCon 2008 will be brand new so if you catch me at Scotch on the Rocks, you'll still get all new content in Brighton, later in the year. With that in mind, what would you like to hear me talk about? I have a few ideas, based on my work at Broadchoice with Model-Glue, ColdSpring and Transfer, but I'm happy to entertain suggestions from folks who might attend CFDevCon 2008 in Brighton in September!
