Dead Blogs?

January 19, 2007 · 11 Comments

I just culled my blog roll, unsubscribing from anything that hasn't posted a new entry in the last six months. I was surprised that my total blog count went down from 226 to just 167. That's nearly 60 blogs that have fallen by the wayside over the last year. Have other folks noticed a decline in blogs this year? I was sad to see some very good blogs had stopped posting but most of the 60 I removed had been fairly half-hearted - some blogs had existed for less than two months (as active blogs). There are a few "dead" blogs that I've stayed subscribed to in the hope that the authors will come back from hibernation. I'd be interested to hear if you have any blogs in that category...

Whew, I'm glad I squeaked out that post yesterday ;-)

Any chance you could publish a list of blogs that you subscribe to?

The Helms and Peters podcast has been 'inactive' for almost 3 months. I'm looking forward to seeing a revival from that.

I have new blog based on MachBlog in the works. I hope to post a little more frequently on ColdSpring and Mach II.

It's pretty inevitable that blogs will surge then fall, and given that they really came into the limelight only about two years ago that is a likely "peak" (though, I suspect it will be cyclical to some extent). As you well know it's tough work keeping up a blog on an ongoing basis, but the fact that it's so easy to experiment with one is one of the many reasons it's such a great publishing format.

One thing I do notice is that your comments don't let people post a URL to a blog, which every other blogging system I have ever seen does. If I recall, that was to cut down on spam, but part of the "conversation" nature of blogging is for people to link out to their own blogs by commenting -- something not allowed on this blog (not sure if there is a CF way to plug into Akismet, but on my WordPress blog that takes care of 99% of spam without any need for captcha, etc.).

I dropped mine as after 6 months it still hadn't made it into the agregrators which limits the traffic you get.

If someone (hint) made a good Coldfusion specific agregator that you could actually get onto then it might be a different story.

Also, I think that a lot of people including myself have moved on or are moving on. We are more focused on Flash / Flex stuff and also looking at others, .NET & Expression.

I see the same kind of trend at user groups.

Well, at least you spurred me into blogging something :-)

I have to admit my blog has been kinda dead lately. As poor excuse as it is - this is due to extremely busy times both it work and personaly. At least on the personal level things should smoothen out come February, as we will then have moved to the house we're desperatly trying to renovate in time (we HAVE to move from our old house before February 1st).

@Nathan, for a while I disallowed http: links but those are allowed now (or should be!) and, of course, all comments are moderated.

I am really hoping to see some more activity from helmsandpeters.com. I think they bring a lot of experience to the table and I enjoy listening to their thoughts on a variety of issues.

Well, um, I may fall into that category. But, it's a temporary situation. My wife and I just completed our drive across the country, finalizing our move to SF. During that time, my server (and blog) have been down. DSL is now up at the new house, and the server and blog should be back up in a few days' time. There should be an entry about our trip shortly after that.
