Love Fireworks? Join the Beta!

October 23, 2006 · 2 Comments

As Ben Forta just pointed out, Fireworks 9 is in beta testing and you can sign up to join the pre-release program. Reports of Fireworks' death were greatly exaggerated (so shame on you if you predicted doom and gloom for this great image editing tool!).

I'm pleased to hear that FW will live on (I have to admit, I was one of those who couldn't see how it would survive).

Obviously, with its long history and genre defining support for both print and screen-oriented output, Photoshop is strongly entrenched as the industry standard photo and image editing app. However, IMO Fireworks' vector handling and tools are much easier to use than PS's, in fact, FW's is easier to use all round and if your need is for a general Web graphics editor that also has very good photo and bitmap editing tools, then FW's fits the bill very nicely.

I should say that I'm still on Photoshop v.7.1 and maybe the ease of use of its vector tools has improved in recent releases? Regardless, as a general Web graphics tool, I regard Fireworks as a fantastic bit of software.

Do you blame people for predicting it's demise. With Photoshop in the same stable, I would venture to say that Fireworks was the first product most people thought would be chopped...even before ColdFusion. LOL!
